Special Abbreviations
The abbreviations given are not used in the pattern text. They are examples of increases that could be used.

The easiest thing to do is eliminate the Special Abbreviations, then readers should make their favorite incs 1 or 2  sts in from each end (their choice) on the rows indicated in the chart. Decs can also done the same way, again worked 1 or 2 sts in to match the beg of the square.
