Reference to pattern correction:
As far as the yarn used, based on the gauge of 12 sts = 4" (a bulky gauge) and the finished dimensions of 40" across (for the original 120 st cast on),  I would guess that the yarn is correct as given. Of course, you could work a similar afghan using any weight yarn you like, including worsted weight. Assuming a gauge of 16 sts = 4",  you would have to cast on 160 sts (a multiple of 8 sts + 8) to work the pattern  and still achieve a 40" width. I would suggest size 8 needles. However,  I don't know how much yardage it would take to work this up in worsted weight yarn. The idea is to work a 4x4 rib, but to move it over 2 sts every 4 rows.

So, The pattern is a multiple of 8 sts + 8, so it doesn't work at 120 sts. Instead you should CO 124 sts.

Rows 1- 4: *K4, p4; rep from * across.
Rows 5 and 7: P2, k4, *p4, k4; rep from * to last 2 sts, end p2.
Rows 6 and 8: K2, p4, *k4, p4; rep from * to last 2 sts, end k2
Rows 9-12: *P4, k4; rep from  * across.
Rows 13 and 15: Rep Row 6.
Rows 14 and 16: Rep Row 5.
Rep Rows 1-16 for the pattern.
