Using 2 strands of yarn held tog, cast on 3 sts leaving an 8-inch tail.
Row 1 (RS): Inc in each st. (6 sts)
Row 2 and all WS rows: Purl.
Row 3: Rep Row 1. (12 sts)
Row 5: *K1, inc; rep from * across. (18 sts)
Row 7: *K2tog, k1; rep from * across. (12 sts)
Row 9: K2tog across. (6 sts)
Row 11: K2tog across. (3 sts)
Row 12: P3tog. (1 st)
Fasten off and cut yarn leaving a 12-inch tail.

Crest for the Blue Jay and Cardinal
Leaving a 5-inch tail, cast on 7 sts in red (cardinal) or black (jay).
Row 1 (and all WS rows): Purl.
Row 2 (RS): *K1, p1; rep from * to last st, k1.
Row 4: Ssk, k1, p1, k1, k2tog.
Row 6: Ssk, p1, k2tog.
Row 8: Sl 1, k2tog, psso.
Cut yarn, leaving a 3-inch tail, and pull tail through.
Fold in half then sew up side with tail at top.
Using cast-on tail, sew cast-on edge to top of head as in photo.
